okok.. time for updates... haha.. erm.. ok.. chrono order yeah...

nothing much happened during the weekdays..cept for class on tues..
i'm taking this sub called Doing Business in the Asia-Pacific Rim..and Singapore is one of the countries we actually study.. so well, the teacher showed this video about singapore... about SDU.. in the 80s.... like how off right?
for those of you who are still scratching your heads.. lemme explain this to you.. S.D.U. is Social Development Unit.. a govt match-making agency that tries to get graduates hitched...
so anyways, the video shows a tacky 80s commercial

girl:"where is my dream guy"
guy:"where is my dream girl" ....... goes on for a few times...
then they both meet eyes then the catch phrase:
why wonder? your dream may be just around the corner..

yah.. and then a short video clip on SDU.. showing 80s singapore.. with singaporeans walking around wearing high pants, large plastic glasses and sporting permed hair... i mean... such a bad potrayal right? and then tells about how the sg govt has SDU to help graduates find partners coz so many of them work so hard they don't have time for relationships.. so after the video.. many ppl laughed..and this girl commented:"its quite pathetic right. they work so hard, they can't find someone and need the govt to set up an agency to do so." i had to say something... i mean its not that bad wat... and in reality,a lotta singaporeans, esp working women rising in their careers, make the choice not to get married.. they don't find the need too..they are satisfied with their lives just as it is...this happens to a lotta developed countries.. the only diff btn us and them is that their govt doesn't step in to try to do something..so is this a bad thing then?the singaporean govt trying to get us hitched...trying to get us to have more children.

i have to admit, it is intruding.. i mean these things are personal and its weird tat the govt's "stepping in"... but then if you look at it socially and economically, it is good for Singapore..and i guess for the good of the country, some things have to be sacrificed... i can't study ancient history coz
no.1: its not economical..how can i contribute to sg to do this?
no.2: its plain unpopular among a lotta Singaporeans lah.. i have to admit it.. =P

but seriously, e pt i wanna make here is.. how many of us get to study what we really like? in a country like singapore where all its resources are its ppl, every person has to be "maximised"... every person has to study something that leads to the doing of something economically beneficial to singapore right?

when i come here.. i can see that the ppl are really doing what they like.. just take this asia-pacific rim class thing for example.. some of the ppl in class are really well-read.. they are interested in asia and man.. they know a lot.. this guy even knows china policies agianst this and that.. i mean.. passion will enable you to read that much.. i feel ashamed sometimes.. not knowing what this ppl know.. and i'm from asia.. i feel that too many singaporeans are well, studying for the sake for the degree.. me included... do i really like accountancy? well... honestly, i don't know.. didn't even really know what it was when i chose it.. but i know its a professional degree and accountancy brings good returns.. so yeah.. we go to sch, mug like crazy during exams and do well academically...after that, its play time!! whoo hoo!! no sch, so not gonna touch books coz we're so sick of it.. there's no real passion... and 3,4 years down the road, when the knowlege is no longer used.. it just fades away in our mind.. forgotten...

but then, if you think about this in the country's pt of view, what the singapore govt is doing is wat a small country like us need.. we have to admit that we are small and very vulnerable.. but when i'm class, the lecturer shows charts and graphs of economic growth in the countries, transparency in accounts and in the govt, GDP per capita.. etc.etc.. Singapore is one of the best asian countries.. (together with Japan and Hongkong) in certain areas we are tops and we can be on par with big economies like USA.. in 40-odd years.. this is what singapore has achieved.. i feel proud seeing all that.. i feel proud of being part of this small, but successful country.. we are called "the east asian miracle" you know.. is this getting singaporeans complacent then? we live a life too cushy and very very sheltered.. we know so lil of the outside world.. basically coz we heck care.. we don't see the need to find out... (all that there is to know is in our texts right?....*rolls eyes* yea right!) our govt is like a parent, guiding our paths.. so why bother? this is the singaporean mentality..

what have we given up for success? what have we forsaken? was it worth it? i think about our other asian counterparts and i say yes.. it is worth it.. it is why many of us can live in a country that is thriving with opportunities for those who are willing to go grab it.. many of us have maids.. many of us live comfortably.. can get a good, proper education...we do not worry about political instability, corruption.. but let us not be complacent.. and let us learn to love what we are given, or chose (out of few choices.. =P) to study.. and let us be eager to find out more of whats outside of our small lil island.. beyond ourselves..

At the end of the day, i'm still happy to say I'm proud to be a Singaporean.. and yes, i will learn to love accountancy...and even if i don't manage to.. i'd use my knowlege to do something else... i'm sure that even a small country like singapore will contain that somethine i like.. =)

ok.. i think that's nuff for today.. =P i write too much man!!! will blog about my weekend adventures next time.. (hopefully some time sooner.. =P) i went skiing!!! whoo hoo!! =D
